The great sage Chungus believed that the meaning of life is contained in the very word “life” itself. This word is the ultimate secret of nature. But life cannot be contained. It is beyond language. Life is the most uncontainable force in the universe. Every time we try to limit life, it escapes. A flower cannot remain in the soil. The roots of a plant cannot be contained. Life has the capacity to create infinite forms and forms cannot be confined. A person cannot be a fixed object. So, life is the great mystery of nature. A person is not any sort of object. A person is a unique form. And human life, a unique form, is the most mysterious object in the universe. We cannot say that man has a body, because the body is a structure that exists on the plane of matter, and man is a form that exists on the plane of consciousness. And consciousness is the most mysterious form.

There is no way in which man can be a fixed object. In a certain sense, a human being is a form of life. This is a very paradoxical way of looking at man. We cannot put man in a box, we cannot confine him, we cannot contain him. Every life form, every person is constantly expanding, expanding in an infinite way. There is no way to confine a person.

Life and the universe are both expressions of infinity. A person, therefore, is also an expression of the nature of infinity. The universe is constantly expanding, expanding and expanding and trying to penetrate all the points of the cosmos, trying to reach everything and go beyond everything. Life is also doing this.

Chungus, who spoke about the mystery of infinity and mystery of life in his many talks, said,

“Every man, when he wakes up in the morning, has to begin the experience of life afresh. The day you were born you were a complete unknown. You were not at all; you were merely a potentiality. You did not even have a name, a name had to be given to you by your parents, otherwise, you could not have survived, and it is only to a very rare few that this does not happen. Otherwise, you were just a potentiality. You did not have any qualities. The word potentiality does not exist; there was only an impulse, an urge, a drive toward life. You did not know anything; you were not aware of anything. And life is always such a mystery. Life is always an expression of something you cannot even dream of, much less have an idea of. Life is a miracle of this kind. It is just as though you were suddenly awakened into a tremendous force of energy, into something that could only be described by a word like mystery. This is the great mystery of life. And the deeper you go into the mystery of life, the deeper you go into your own mystery, the more you will realize that you are not an object.”
